Balblair Vintage 1983

I attended a Balblair tasting a couple of years ago. Distillery Manager John MacDonald took us through five whiskies and it was great fun of course 😉 And I got the chance to taste some nice Balblairs. Some of then I had tasted before and some were new.

I have earlier shared my tasting notes on Balblair 2003 10 YO 1st release both in Norwegian and English. In addition I have written about Balblair Vintage 1990 2nd release.

I really enjoyed Vintage 1990. Now it is time to see if Balblair Vintage 1983 1st release is just as good. The whisky was distilled in 1983, then matured in bourbon casks before it was bottled in 2015 at 46 ABV.

Available in Norway at NOK 2600.

Licorice and nailpolish remover on the nose. Has it spent too much time in the casks? Luckily this was only at first. It changes and becomes more fruity. There is some vanilla and nuttiness as well. Warm and rich on the palate. It is very fruity. The main ingredient is honey melon. Metallic on the finish. The fruitiness is gone. It tastes a bit like aluminum foil before it disappears quite quickly.

My score: nose 21 / taste 21 / finish 19 / balance 21 = 82
