Box Whisky PX – Pedro Ximénez Finish

I am tasting another whisky from Box Distillery (now High Coast) in Sweden. Here is a few words about Box PX:

In November 2016, Box PX, a whisky matured in the most powerful sherry variety Pedro Ximenez, was launched. The whisky was originally designed to meet the need for this style of whisky from the Taiwanese market. The issue was also sold to a limited extent in other markets.

Box PX is a completely unpeated, dark and sweet whisky made of 100% Pilsner malt. The whisky has taken lots of character from the heavy Spanish sherry casks. Originally, the casks came from the American bourbon industry (Jack Daniels and Heaven Hill), who exported them to the sherry producer Miguel Martin. Box PX quickly became much sought after and difficult to obtain in Europe.

It is an unpeated whisky which was first matured in 200L Bourbon casks for 4 years before being finished in 55L American oak PX casks for 1 year. The outturn was 1507 bottles at 56,7 ABV.

Warm and fruity notes on the nose. Ripe melon and peaches – and a hint of overripe banana. A bit sharp on the palate at first, but then I get fruit here as well. Honey melon, red apples and mango. Ginger gives a fizzy tickling on the tongue. The finish is smooth and fruity with sugar syrup. Some black pepper and ginger.

My score: nose 20 / taste 21 / finish 21 / balance 21 = 83

Thanks, Thomas!
