Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay is quite experimental. They have three different expressions in addition to very different cask maturations. Port Charlotte is their heavily peated range. In addition they have the unpeated Laddie and the super-heavily peated Octomore.
Port Charlotte 2007 CC:01 is a travel retail release. The whisky has been matured in French oak (Quercus robur) casks that previously held one an Eau de Vie from the western Cognac region. It was distilled 2007 and bottled 2017 at 57,8 ABV.
Sweet and peaty on the nose. I get lots of fresh licorice and some maltiness. Iodine, cardamom, nutmeg and white pepper. Quite complex. A rich, soft peatiness on the palate. Licorice, peaches and warm apple cake with cinnamon. The finish has a soft and elegant peatiness. Some sugar syrup, burnt caramel, wet ashes and licorice in a nice combination 🙂 A bit oaky.
