At the last meeting for The Ladies’ Share we tasted a new, to us, Bunnahabhain. It is called Cruach-Mhòna. The whisky was a part of a blind tasting which means our senses were challenged. Actually we did not guess this one to be an Islay whisky!
This is a peated whisky from Bunnahabhain Distillery bottled at 50 ABV. We tasted batch no. 11 of this whisky. This is what The Whisky Exchange says about the it:
Cruach-Mhona, gaelic for ‘peat stack’, a pile of drying peat bricks cut for fuel, is a departure from Bunnahabhain’s usual style, adding in some peat to their normally unpeated spirit. Originally released solely into travel retail.
Quite sour on the nose. It reminds me of sea water and driftwood on the beach. The smoke is hiding discretely in the background. A bit raw on the palate. Salt, lemon, smoke, licorice, pepper and chili. These tastes continues on to the finish. Still salt, smoke and pepper. It is a bit sour and oaky.
My score: nose 19 / taste 21 / finish 20 / balance 20 = 80
