Caol Ila Moch

When The Ladies’ Share visited Islay September 2016 I got to try Caol Ila Moch a couple of times. At our tasting at the distillery Nigel put this as the first whisky in the line-up. (If you are interested in reading about our trip, please read here, here and here!)

Caol Ila Moch is a new release from Caol Ila Distillery. It is a no age statement (NAS) whisky. When we tasted it at the distillery we were told it is about 7-9 YO. The whisky has been matured in second and third fill bourbon casks, and it is bottled at 43 ABV. It is available in Norway at NOK 519,90.

This is what the distillery says about the whisky:

Moch takes it’s name from the Gaelic for ‘dawn’. Moch is sweet, soft, smooth, clean, fresh and lightly smoky. Scrubbed-clean aromas and smoky-dry notes of peat is followed through on the palate by a sweet, then salty, clarity and simplicity.

Fresh on the nose at first with a lot of lemon. Then I get licorice, some blackcurrant, leather and tobacco. The smoke is light and well integrated with the rest. Rich on the palate. Still lemon, licorice and leather. It is even more fresh on the palate with menthol and eucalyptus. The smoke is well integrated here as well. Salt, lemon and smoke on the finish. A bit dry. This was a nice and very well balanced whisky.

My score: nose 22 / taste 22 / finish 21 / balance 22 = 87
