One of the very first whiskies I tasted at Dr. Jekyll’s Pub in Oslo was their own (lovely!) bottling of Highland Park 12 YO Dr. Jekyll’s Expression (read about it here – in Norwegian). After the Highland Park they released Karuizawa 14 YO, Glengoyne 16 YO, Laphroaig 7 YO and Springbank 19 YO (read about it here), and now: Chichibu 🙂
So, the staff at Jekyll’s has picked another cask from Japan. First the Karuizawa and now a whisky from Chichibu Distillery. The whisky was distilled in December 2010 and bottled in December 2017, which makes it 7 YO. It was matured in a sherry hogshead #2649. The outturn was 286 bottles at 59,6 ABV. It will be available in Norway, but I could not find it on the list of new releases in March 2018 (see list on Whisky Saga).
Smooth and warm on the nose. Caramel, plums and baked apples. Rich and complex. Fruity. Ginger beer. Rich and spicy on the palate. Oaky – in a good way. Fizzy. Ginger beer. Overripe plums and baked apples. Juicy plums and spice on the finish. It tickles on the palate. A well balanced whisky.
My score: nose 22 / taste 23 / finish 22 / balance 23 = 90
