Dufftown 2008 9 YO Selected Malts

Selected Malts is a new Swedish independent bottler! Today I am tasting their very first release: Dufftown. Dufftown distillery is located in Speyside, Scotland.

This whisky was distilled 6 June (the National Day of Sweden) 2008 and bottled 8 January 2018 which makes it 9 YO. It was first been matured in a bourbon barrel. The cask was leaking and had lost a lot of whisky – and the ABV was heavily reduced. Selected Malts decided to give the whisky a chance in new casks. They filled three 60 litre casks, which had held Pedro Ximenez sherry, and gave the whisky a finish for five months. The outturn was 293 bottles at 44,1 ABV.

It is already sold out in Sweden.

Sherry on the nose. Warm and fresh. At first I get berries – as they smell while they are still on the bush. It’s like walking in a garden with a lot of berry bushes. And then it turns green. Mint and eucalyptus and oak. Rich and warm on the palate. Fruity. I get honey melon and dates. Very spicy. Lots of ginger, white pepper and nutmeg. Impressively rich to be bottled at 44,1 ABV. The finish is a bit watery. The spiciness is still there.

My score: nose 21 / taste 22 / finish 21 / balance 21 = 85

Thanks, Patrik!
