Today I am tasting a whisky from a new (at least to me) independent bottler in Germany: whic. I have tasted the three whiskies from their sujet series.
I have not tasted that many whiskies from Fettercairn Distillery. The distillery is located in the region Highlands in Scotland and is owned by White & Mackay. This is what they say on their webpage:
Fettercairn is one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland. The name Fettercairn means ‘foot of the mountain’ and on visiting this peaceful place you can understand the foresight of the person that named the town.
Todays Fettercairn is 10 YO. It was distilled in November 2006 and bottled in January 2017 at 52,6 ABV. It has been given a eight months finish in Madeira Hogsheads. The outturn was 420 bottles.
Warm and dusty on the nose. Orange zest. It becomes very fruity after a short while. I get apples, pears and grapes. There is some ginger as well. There is something sour, but I cannot find the right words to describe it. The sourness is not something bad, it only makes the smell more interesting. Very smooth on the palate. Almost like sugar syrup. The taste is quite spicy and warm. White pepper, black pepper and nutmeg at first. A bit rough on the tongue. Then the bitter taste of orange zest appears mixed with chili and caramel. The finish is smooth and sweet in a dry way, like a fudge crumbling in my mouth. The sourness from the smell appears in the end.
My score: nose 22 / taste 22 / finish 22 / balance 22 = 88
