I am continuing my tasting notes from my holiday in Sweden with a whisky I was served blind. Tasting the whisky blind is to me the best way to taste it.
Well, the whisky turned out to be a Glen Keith! Glen Keith distillery was opened by Chivas Brothers in 1958 mostly to produce whisky for blending purposes. You will therefore find most independent bottlings from Glen Keith and only a few distillery bottlings. The distillery was mothballed in 1999 and then reopened in 2013.
Todays whisky was released as a part of the bottling serie Connoisseurs Choice from the independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail. It has been matured in refill sherry hogsheads from 1996 to 2013 and is bottled at 46 ABV.
Light and sweet on the nose. It smells like candy and vanilla. After a while it turns more fresh with eucalyptus and ginger beer. Then some oakiness and sourness. Light and sweet on the palate as well. Spicy. Vanilla, white pepper, nutmeg and ginger. After some sips it became more fresh with eucalyptus. A spicy and fresh finish. White pepper and peanut shell. A bit short. I would call this a well balanced whisky.
My score: nose 21 / taste 22 / finish 21 / balance 22 = 86
