I have tasted a couple of Kilkerran before, one of them was the Open Day 2015 Rum Wood – which I enjoyed a lot.
Glengyle distillery is the youngest distillery in Campbeltown in Scotland. They started production Spring 2004 and name their single malt whisky Kilkerran.
Kilkerran Work In Progress 7 Sherry Wood was released 2015. It was bottled at 46 % ABV and 12000 bottles were made available worldwide. The whisky is available in Norway at NOK 695.
Light smoke on the nose at first. The malt they use is lightly peated (15 ppm). It feels quite young with the smell of malt and bread dough. It becomes more fruity after a while and I noticed dried fruits, apricots and orange peel. Then nuts and butter. Wow, the nose really develops. Very soft and round on the palate. The malt is the first thing I think of. Then it becomes more complex. Fruits and caramel. Gentle smoke. Butter candy, rich and spicy. A malty finish with bread dough. Quite rough actually. It seems a bit young (which of course it is). Salt and spices. Oily and warm.
My score: nose 20 / taste 21 / finish 20 / balance 20 = 81
