I am still working my way through The Ladies’ Share’s tasting ‘Back to Islay‘. The time has come for Laphroaig Distillery. I guess we all feel something special when we think back at our visit at Laphroaig since we spent almost a whole day there.
If you read the article about our day, you will find that we all got to fill our own 250 ml bottle of Laphroaig at the end of the tour. We could choose between three casks. At our ‘Back to Islay’ tasting one of the Ladies gave us a taste of her own hand-filled at the distillery bottling. Her whisky was distilled 1998 and bottled 2016-09-14 from refill sherry butt #700040 at 59,3 ABV. She has bottle number 801.
Rich and warm on the nose. Licorice, orange, ash and a delicate smoke. Mmmm…really reach and complex on the palate. The smoke is dominating. There is salt and beach, but not in the sour way like some whiskies can be. Eucalyptus, like the Norwegian lozenge Dent. Sweet. The finish is both dry and sweet. I get vanilla and pepper. Not as complex as the taste.
My score: nose 23 / taste 24 / finish 21 / balance 22 = 90
