Laphroaig Cairdeas 2016

As I wrote last Thursday: The whisky world is filled with kind people. Magnus was happy to give me a sample of Laphroaig Cairdeas 2016. Laphroaig Distillery releases a special whisky every year for the Islay festival Feis Ile. This is what Laphroaig tells us about it:

Each year our Master Distiller, John Campbell, handcrafts a limited edition malt to celebrate friendship (“Cairdeas“ in Gaelic).

This 2016 bottling features fully-matured Laphroaig aged in ex-bourbon barrels before being artfully married together for a second maturation in Madeira seasoned traditional hogsheads.

Cairdeas 2016 has been matured in bourbon casks and been given a finish in Madeira Hogshead. It is bottled at 51,6 ABV.

Sweet on the nose. Plums and Cantaloupe. The smoke is hiding discretely in the background. It Dark chocolate and some spices. Smooth and rich on the palate. Plums here as well. Salt fudge and sugar. The smoke is not hiding anymore. Dark chocolate with chilli on the finish. It leaves my mouth feeling dry. A bit nutty.

My score: nose 21 / taste 22 / finish 21 / balance 22 = 86

Thanks, Magnus!
