Longrow 18 YO

Springbank Distillery produces three different styles of whiskies; Hazelburn is unpeated, Springbank is medium peated and Longrow is heavily peated. I recently shared my tasting notes on Hazelburn 10 YO, Springbank Green 13 YO and Longrow CV.

Longrow 18 YO is released in a Limited Edition every year. The 2016 release has been matured in 60 percent rum casks and 40 percent refill sherry casks. The rum casks give it a smooth nose and palate and hide away most of the peat. I used this release once at a whisky tasting to show how different a heavily peated whisky can appear when it comes to different types of casks used for maturation. This whisky is bottled at 46 ABV.

It is available in Norway at NOK 1450.

Peat and lemon at first. Fresh. Eucalyptus, dust, freshly cut grass. Complex. Ginger bread and cinnamon. Mmm… Rich on the palate. Poof! Vanilla, peat and lemon juice. Caramel and white pepper. The finish is more down to earth. Salt and white pepper. A strange sweetness I cannot describe. A bit dry.

My score: nose 22 / taste 23 / finish 21 / balance 22 = 88
