Smögen 2011 Single Cask Edition No. 5 #51/2011

This is the fifth single cask release from Smögen Distillery in Sweden. I have previously reviewed Single Cask Edition No. 2 (read it here) and No. 4 (read it here).

The whisky was distilled 23 October 2011 and bottled 18 March 2018. It was matured in a first-fill sherry hogshead #51/2011 made of American white oak. The sherry cask was “made” at the distillery: A new cask was filled with Oloroso sherry and held the sherry for six months. Then the cask was emptied before filled with new make. The outturn was 276 bottles at 64 ABV. As always from Smögen whisky the barley is heavliy peated. The malt is based on barley grown on the farm, literally on the threshold of the distillery!

It will be available at Systembolaget 31 May 2018.

Warm peat on the nose. Fruity and nutty. I get mango, papaya, peach and peanut shell. It is surprisingly smooth. Raisins and fudge. Milk chocolate appears after a while together with oak. Rich and complex on the palate. Peat, salt and sweetness. Still surprisingly smooth when you think of the ABV. Fruity. It does not have a heavy sherry influenced taste. I get “lighter” fruits like peach and mango. Milk chocolate and oak on the palate as well. The finish is lingering. Peaty fudge and ginger.

My score: nose 21 / taste 22 / finish 21 / balance 22 = 86

I did try this one with water, but I prefer it as it is 🙂
