Smögen Barrique!

I worked for Smögen Distillery at Linköping whiskyexpo 2018 (I will share a few words about the festival later!). In Linköping we presented the newest bottling: Barrique! It will be released at Systembolaget 1 March 2018. The price will be approximately SEK 867 – if I remember correctly.

Smögen Barrique! is a 7 YO whisky. It is the oldest whisky released from Smögen Distillery so far (the distillery started production in 2010). The malt is Optic barley, heavily peated.

The whisky is a vatting of four red wine barrique (225 l) casks from Bordeaux in France, #4 & 23-25/2010. The casks are made of French oak. It was distilled during September-December 2010 and bottled in January 2018 at 60,3 ABV. The outturn was 1685 bottles.

I would recommend to pour the whisky 20-30 minutes before you enjoy it. Then the aromas will open up.

Berries and peat on the nose. Blackcurrant, currants and gooseberry. Oaky. White pepper and vinous aromas, if you know what I mean. Rich and peaty on the palate. Really peaty! I get berries on the palate as well. Oily and oaky. Spicy and something sweet, like dark confectionery chocolate with filling. The finish is peaty, nutty and oaky, but at the same time smooth. Still the taste of berries, and some dark chocolate.

My score: nose 21 / taste 22 / finish 21 / balance 21 = 85

– Tone
