One year ago the lovely Elisabeth Andersen from Glengoyne Distillery held a tasting for The Ladies’ Share. You can read about it here.
Glengoyne Distillery is owned by Ian Macleod. Ian Macleod bought Tamhdu Distillery in 2011. From this distillery Elisabeth served us a special bottling: Tamdhu Batch Strength. This whisky consists of 70 percent first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, and the rest is refill sherry casks. It is approximately 10-12 YO, but there is no age statement on the bottle. We tasted Batch 001, bottled in 2015 at 58,8 ABV.
I have tasted this whisky many times since the tasting and I find it to be a true “sherry bomb” in the world of whisky 🙂 Unfortunately it is not available in Norway.
A lot of sherry notes on the nose. Soft, smooth and dusty. Orange peel, peaches and chocolate. Quite sharp on the palate at first. Oaky with salt and pepper. Then it becomes more smooth – in a way. And I get caramel and dark chocolate. Chili suddenly appears. The finish i dry and oaky with dark chocolate. I did not get the usual dates and figs and plums this time, but still a really nice sherry matured whisky.
My score: nose 23 / taste 22 / finish 21 / balance 22 = 88
