Tasting Glen Moray with Iain Allan

At the food and drink fair in Oslo 3 and 4 March 2017 called Spis & Drikk wine had the main focus. But: there were some nice whiskies there as well!

I attended a Glen Moray tasting with Iain Allan. When Iain visited Norway last year I could not attend his tasting and therefore I was really looking forward to do so now.

Glen Moray Distillery is located in Speyside by the river Lossie. It was established back in 1897 and will celebrate its 120th Anniversary 13 September this year. During these years there has only been five Master Distillers, Graham Coull being the fifth! Glen Moray produces 4 millions LPA. Glen Moray mainly produces unpeated whiskies. Since 2010 they have been making peated whisky for one month per year.

Iain brought five whiskies to the tasting:

  1. Glen Moray 8 YO, 40 ABV, made from a mix of first-, second- and third-fill bourbon cask, mainly first-fill. Light and fruity whisky with vanilla, malt and nuts. Very smooth. Available in Norway at NOK 399,90.
  2. Glen Moray 12 YO, 40 ABB, made from mostly first-fill bourbon casks. Rich and warm with ginger, nuts and a lot of spices. Available in Norway at NOK 464,90.
  3. Glen Moray Classic Port Cask Finish, NAS, 40 ABV, which has been given a finish in port casks for 8 months. Berries and citrus dominates both on the nose and the palate.
  4. Glen Moray Classic Peated, NAS, 40 ABV, 40 ppm in the malt and 18 ppm in the whisky. Clean and elegant. The smoke is obvious. Salt and beach with vanilla and a nose of soda. Available in Norway at NOK 390,20.
  5. Glen Moray 18 YO, 47,2 ABV, non-chill filtered and bottled from 100 percent first-fill bourbon casks. Released in the UK January 2017. Wow! Rich and smooth with a lot of vanilla, caramel and herbs. Oily and lingering.

After the tasting I also tasted Glen Moray 15 YO matured in sherry casks.
