Tasting Glengoyne and Tamdhu with Elisabeth

Last Thursday Elisabeth Andersen from Glengoyne Distillery, owned by Ian Macleod, held a tasting for The Ladies’ Share!

Elisabeth is one of the knowledgeable women in the world of whisky. She brought four core range whiskies from Glengoyne and a special Tamdhu as well to the tasting. Some of the Ladies had not tasted the core range from Glengoyne earlier.

Ian Macleod bought Glengoyne Distillery in 2003. Glengoyne has been a legal distillery since 1833 (the name was Burnfoot back then). Today they produce one million liter per year and they have the slowest destillation process in Scotland. Mostly they are known for their sherry matured whiskies, but they started experimenting with bourbon casks in the eighties.

Elisabeth took us through these whiskies where we got to taste both sherry matured whiskies and a mix of sherry and bourbon casks:

  • Glengoyne 10 YO, 40 ABV
    • 30 percent first-fill Oloroso sherry casks and 70 percent refill sherry casks.
  • Glengoyne 15 YO, 43 ABV
    • 30 percent first-fill bourbon casks, 20 percent first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, the rest is refill sherry casks.
  • Glengoyne 18 YO, 43 ABV
    • 50 percent first-fill Oloroso sherry casks (35 percent European Oak and 15 percent American Oak), the rest is refill sherry casks.
  • Glengoyne 21 YO, 43 ABV
    • 100 percent first-fill Oloroso sherry casks and 100 percent European Oak

Ian Macleod bought Tamhdu Distillery in 2011. From this distillery Elisabeth served a special bottling:

  • Tamdhu Batch Strength, NAS, 58,8 ABV
    • 70 percent first-fill Oloroso sherry casks, the rest is refill sherry casks.
    • Approximately 10-12 YO.

I will share my tasting notes on a couple of the whiskies in the coming weeks.

Thanks a lot, Elisabeth! We had an amazing evening 🙂
