At Cinderella Whisky Fair 2019 I had a really good time at The Helsinki Distilling Company stand. It was a real pleasure to meet Mikko and Seamus again.
The Helsinki Distilling Company is located in Helsinki, Finland. They produces rye whiskey. Here is what they say:
The Helsinki Distilling Company has been distilling Whiskey since 2013. The very first casks were bottled in August 2017, after which we have been steadily releasing small batches of 100% Rye Malt Whiskey and Rye Malt (70% Rye, 30% Barley). In the future, there will also be a Single Malt Whiskey available.
All of our whiskey is made from local Finnish grains, pure Finnish water and heaps of love. Stay tuned for future releases!
Todays whiskey will be released today; 25 February 2019! It is the 6th Anniversary bottling for Viskin Ystävien Seura made of 70 percent rye and 30 percent barley. The whiskey has been matured in new American oak casks before it was given a finish in rum casks. It is bottled at 59,3 ABV. I tasted from bottle 474/680.
It smells a bit like walking into a warehouse. Oaky and woody…and watery. Strange! Then there comes a spiciness and sweetness. I get nutmeg, cardamom and ginger. Honey melon and overripe pears. Oaky and sweet on the palate. The oak dominates. In addition I get honey melon and pears here as well. Lemon. The finish is nutty, dry and sweet. Lemon caramel (like Fox) and salted butter.
My score: nose 20 / palate 21 / finish 22 / balance 21 = 84
Thanks for the talk and the sample, Mikko & Séamus!
