Wolfburn online tasting

The Swedish blogger Anki Wolfmoon arranged an on-line whisky tasting for some other Swedish bloggers and me. We all sat down in our own homes with the samples and started the tasting at the same time – of course. We did nosing and tasting and nosing and tasting and so on and shared our notes via Messenger. It worked very well! Even with eight persons attending the tasting.

So, what did we taste? We were lucky to taste some spirit samples from Wolfburn distillery. Here are what we tasted and what I thought (with a little help from the others):

1. New Make distilled 2010, 63,5 ABV

Grappa, licorice, lemon and malt on the nose. Rich, smooth, malt and licorice on the palate. Sweet, warm and salt.

My score: nose 18 / taste 20 / finish 20 / balance 20 = 78

2. Distilled 2014 1,5 YO, Quarter cask first fill #451, 62,2 ABV

Glue, freshly chopped wood, permanent marker, white spirit and punch candy on the nose. Sharp, fresh, mint, eucalyptus, new make and woody on the palate. Sugar, mint, chocolate and woody in the end.

My score: nose 16 / taste 18 / finish 16 / balance 17 = 67

3. Distilled 2013 2,5 YO, ASB (American Standard Barrel, ex-bourbon) #294, 61,6 ABV

Pineapple, grapes, white pepper, acetone, grapefruit and bitter orange peel on the nose. Rich, vanilla, spicy, oily, burnt sugar, malt and salt on the palate. Sugary and oily with licorice, malt and perfume in the end.

My score: nose 17 / taste 20 / finish 18 / balance 18 = 75

4. Distilled 2013, 2 3/4 YO, Second fill sherry butt #12, 60,2 ABV

Newmake, sour, acetone and woody on the nose. Some chocolate as well. Sharp, rich chocolate, sugar, fruit caramel and confect chocolate on the palate. No notes from the sherry butt.

My score: nose 21 / taste 22 / finish 20 / balance 20 = 83

5. Distilled 2013, 2,5 YO, Quarter cask ex peat #337, 60,4 ABV

Gentle, smooth, Coca Cola and apples on the nose. Fresh with mint and eucalyptus. Some new make notes. Rich, vanilla, fudge, salt, pepper, chilli and fruit candy on the palate. A bit dry and woody in the end, but nice and lingering warm with aniseed.

My score: nose 21 / taste 22 / finish 21 / balance 21 = 85

I tasted the whiskies again tonight and I ended up with the same order from best to the least best: 5,4,1,3 and 2.

I have already mentioned Wolfburn distillery in my article about Cinderella Whisky Fair 2016. Since then Wolfburn distillery has announced they will release a whisky exclusive for Viking Line. I am looking forward to tasting it!
