Auchentoshan distillery is located in the region Lowland in Scotland. I have tasted some of their whiskies and mostly independent bottlings. Since I have only shared my tasting notes on one Auchentoshan earlier, Auchentoshan Cooper’s Reserve 14 YO, it is time for a new one today.
Todays whisky is Auchentoshan Select. This is a no age statement whisky bottled at 40 ABV for travel retail. This is what the distillery tells us about the whisky:
Triple distilled and matured in a careful selection of oak casks. The result: a subtle Lowland Single Malt Whisky with a distinctive aroma of crisp green apples, fresh citrus and the signature smooth, delicate, Auchentoshan taste.
We tasted it at a meeting for The Ladies’ Share. We found it to be light and woody and it had quite a lot of sourness on the nose. Perfume and the smell of cleanser (Jif) with lemon flavour. Bitter, watery and sharp on the palate. Vanilla and oak on the finish, too much oak actually. One of the Ladies thought this was the driest whisky of the evening. Another one called it nachspiel whisky.
My score: nose 18 / taste 19 / finish 19 / balance 19 = 76
