Smögen Distillery is located on the west coast of Sweden. The whiskies from Smögen are heavily peated, big and heavy with lots of character, mostly bottled at cask strength.
Today I am tasting a new whisky to be released in Sweden Monday 5th December 2022 at SEK 825. This is batch 4 of Smögen 8 YO. It is distilled in July 2014 and then fully matured in five Pedro Ximenex (sweet sherry) hogsheads until bottled in August 2022 at 59 ABV. The outturn was over 2000 bottles.
Previously I have tasted Smögen 8 YO batch 1 (2019) and Smögen 8 YO batch 3 (2021).
Heavy sherry notes on the nose with nicely integrated peat. The peat is covered in the sherry notes and hides in the background. Warm and rich with sweet and juicy apricots and plums. A sherry and peat explosion when the whisky hits the palate. Wow, so rich and intense! Still with the sweet and juicy apricots and plums. In addition, lots of spices. The finish is warm and spicy. White pepper and ginger.
My score: nose 23 / taste 22 / finish 21 / balance 22 = 88
